The county of West Midlands was formed in 1974.  Prior to that time, its constituent cities and districts were organized as follows:
* Coventry, Solihull, and most of Birmingham belonged to [[Warwickshire]].
* Dudley, part of Sandwell, and a small part of Birmingham belonged to [[Worcestershire]].
* Wolverhampton, Walsall, part of Sandwell, and a small part of Birmingham belonged to [[Staffordshire]].
